Franklin County was named for Benjamin Franklin in 1814. It originally included what is now Colbert County, but Colbert was carved out in 1867.
Franklin County is not part of a metropolitan area. It's 1996 population of 29,253 ranked it as 37th in the state. Population of Russellville was 8,343 in 1996, making it the largest city in the county. Go to our demographics and statistics section for more information.

Russellville, the county seat, is named for Major William Russell, one of Andrew Jackson's officers who settled in the area in 1815. Read more on our history.
The largest industries in Franklin County are poultry and durable goods manufacturing. Following closely are non-durable goods manufacturing and services. Of the industries that accounted for at least 5% of earnings, durable goods manufacturing was the fastest growing sector.
 

A variety of shopping awaits residents and visitors to Franklin County.  Shops line the downtown streets in Phil Campbell, Russellville, and Red Bay.  Everything is available from merchants and consumer services suppliers including appliances, computers, printing, and office supplies, accounting and insurance services, antiques, floral arrangements, banks, groceries, clothing and shoes for the entire family, jewelry and gifts.  Coffee shops and restaurants serve shoppers and people who work in the offices, stores and manufacturing facilities of Franklin County.
